The word Sherpa is derived from the language spoken by themselves sherpa people which means ‘Shar” east and ‘Pa’ people. Sherpa is the people living around the eastern part of the Himalayas. Nowadays, they are mostly found in the hilly regions too. They are the people who have their different cultures and traditions. They even have their own cultural dresses. Sherpa people are renowned for mountaineering, strength, and international climbing. Similarly, they celebrate the festivals like Loshar, Dashain, Buddha Jayanti, Sankratis, etc. The sherpa people living in the Himalayas wear their cultural dresses on a daily basis because of the climatic condition. BUt sherpa of lower regions wears the dresses on special occasions like festivals. programs, etc.
Sherpa women wear a long inner shirt which is called wan-Ju over garment like a pant made up of wool. Then they wear a thick course wrapping around the waist called Bakhu in Nepali. Married women wear the red apron called Pangden. Both married and unmarried women wear a rear apron called Gyaptil or Mail. Sherpa women wear jewelry made up of gold and pearl around the neck to ear like dhungri, Kaou (made by precious stone), Then wears a hat called Shyamu which completes the sherpa women’s cultural dress.
